Dermal Filler
The injections of Dermal Filler to plump the lips is a good option for people who want to see how their lips might look before undergoing a more permanent augmentation. This procedure is done with topical or local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The filler is placed along the lip lines to augment the upper lip, lower lip and Cupid’s bow. Extra care is taken to preserve a natural appearance.
After the injections, the area may be massaged to ensure a smooth appearance. To reduce the amount of swelling, ice may be applied after the procedure.
The results will be noticeable immediately but it may take a few weeks to appreciate the final result. Many patients return to their daily activities the same day as the procedure. Dermal fillers generally last approximately 12 – 18 months. The most common side effects reported are bruising and swelling, which will usually resolve in a few days.
Fat Grafting & Lip Implant
If you are looking for a more permanent solution to enhance your lips, you may be interested in fat grafting or a lip implant. For fat grafting, a small amount of your own tissue is harvested through liposuction. The fat is cleaned, processed and transferred into the lips with a tiny injection instrument.
For lip implants, a small incision is made at each corner of the lip. The implant is carefully placed and the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
Both fat grafting and lip implants are outpatient procedures that Dr. Nichols performs with patients under IV anesthesia. Patients may experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling during the first week. Once the swelling resolves, the lip fullness will provide a long lasting result. Occasionally, patients may have some temporary numbness of the lips but this will usually resolve in a few weeks up to a few months.
Lip implants come in multiple sizes and Dr. Nichols will help guide you in making the appropriate decision based on your specific needs. Typically, the implants are made out of a permanent solid material developed to last. Lip augmentation is a a relatively simple procedure that can provide long lasting volume correction to lips.
