What to Expect During a ZO® 3-Step Peel?
The ZO® 3-Step Peel is an aggressive strength peel that utilizes a blend of 17% salicylic, 10% tricholracetic and 5% lactic acids to remove the outer layer of the epidermis. It can be done without any form of sedation.
The treatment can be completed in just 20 minutes. For best results, we recommend a series of four ZO® peels stacked 4-6 weeks apart.
During the first few seconds of the treatment, you may feel a minor stinging sensation as the peel is applied. You should expect some light flaking of your skin during the first week, which typically stops after 3-4 days. Skin renewal comes next, resulting in a fresh and healthy complexion. You will have a smoother and more even skin tone, with fewer spots and wrinkles.
ZO® Controlled Depth Peel
The ZO® Controlled Depth Peel is a robust in-office dermal peel that is designed to for patients seeking dramatic, long lasting skin renewal. Utilizing a concentration of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) buffered for different skin types, this customized peel allows Dr. Nichols to customize the depth of the peel and the number of coats applied in order to tailor the process to your skin’s specific needs. This type peel can even be performed on the neck, chest, hands, back, arms and legs to reduce brown spots, age spots and uneven pigmentation.
- Reduces brown spots, age spots and uneven pigmentation
- Minimizes or eliminates the appearance of melasma
- Improves the texture of leathery, sun damaged skin
- Treats acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
- Tightens lax skin
This procedure is best suited for patients with melasma, severe skin laxity, and severe textural damage. It may be helpful for some patients with mild acne scares however, these patients usually get the best results from laser resurfacing.
What Does The ZO® Controlled Depth Peel Consist of?
The peel is a quick and relatively simple procedure that in most cases is done under light IV sedation.
Application of the ZO® peel takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of layers Dr. Nichols has determined is necessary to achieve your goals. You will experience a mild burning sensation that lasts 2 to 3 minutes (we use an electric fan to minimize this sensation).
After the procedure, you will experience light swelling, and your skin will turn brownish in color and begin to peel within 2 to 3 days. This peeling will continue over the next several days and should be healed in an average of 7 to 10 days.
If you are having a lighter, exfoliative peel, healing is completed in 3 to 6 days. In either case, this peeling should not disrupt your regular lifestyle for long, although you may want to limit your normal activity. Makeup can usually be applied after five days.
Once your skin has completely finished peeling, you will notice a visible improvement in your complexion. Your skin’s appearance will continue to improve for the next 4 to 6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier, and more youthful looking.
Can ZO® Peels Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Yes, we commonly combine the ZO® Peel with other procedures you may be interested in. This can be very effective in achieving even more dramatic results in the same time period. Schedule a consultation to discuss the possible combinations that may be best for your skin.
Can a ZO® Peel Be Repeated for Maximum Results?
During the consultation, Dr. Nichols will tell you what type peel and how many are necessary to give you the desired result. In most cases, one to three ZO® Peels can achieve significant improvements for many skin problems. The more superficial peel can be performed every 3-4 weeks and the deeper peel every 8-12 weeks until your desired goals are reached.
Is there Skin Treatments Required Before a ZO® Peel?
Dr. Nichols prefers that you are on a pre-operative skin care regimen specific for your skin type for usually 6 to 12 weeks prior to having a ZO® Peel. This helps promote better and quicker healing while decreasing the chance for complications. Often, the topical creams, (Retinols and Skin Brighteners) are both used. Treatment is individualized during your consultation visit based on your level of skin damage and wrinkles. Preparatory topical skin treatment is also used prior to deeper peels or laser skin resurfacing to maximize your results.
How Can I Maintain The Benefits of The ZO® Peel?
Keeping your skin’s new healthy glow and youthful appearance is an ongoing process. ZO® Skin Health is an at-home program designed to promote long-term overall skin health and work safely and effectively in conjunction with the chemical peel. Ask Dr. Nichols for more information on ZO® Skincare, Retinols, Growth Factors and other topical skin products that may further improve your skin.
